ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Warns Pet Owners: Summer Is The Deadliest Time of Year For Companion Animals

The ASPCA ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center
Since 1978, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center has been the premier animal poison control center in North America. The center, an allied agency of the University of Illinois, is the only facility of its kind staffed by 25 veterinarians, including 9 board-certified toxicologists and 14 certified veterinary technicians. Located in Urbana, Ill., the specially trained staff provides assistance to pet owners and specific analysis and treatment recommendations to veterinarians pertaining to toxic chemicals and dangerous plants, products and substances 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I
n 2005, the center handled more than 100,000 cases. In addition, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center provides extensive veterinary toxicology consulting on a wide array of subjects, including legal cases, formulation issues, product liability, regulatory reporting and bio surveillance. To reach the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, call (888) 426-4435. For more information on the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, visit www.aspca.org/apcc

The problem with the ASPCA is in order to even speak to them, you must pay $55.00 over the phone first. I wonder how many people decide not to do that?

Unfortunately, I didn't find about them, until it was too late. Too bad my Vet didn't steer me in that direction. All she told me was "There is NO WAY to test  or treat for pesticide exposure".

Hmmmmm... how do I say this nicely? I can't, she lied to me.

If you think your pet has been poisoned, here is the ASPCA phone number. And yes, you must pay $55.00 to speak with someone.

Shareholder Network Launched to Curtail Toxics in Products

NEW YORK, May 4, 2006 - Seventeen investing organizations collectively representing more than $22 billion in assets under management have issued a joint statement calling for other financial professionals and investors to join with them in supporting shareholder resolutions seeking better disclosure regarding the risks of toxics in products, and better corporate strategies for moving to safer alternatives when they are available.

The investors assert that while they are accustomed to taking risks, many of the risks associated with toxic materials in products are unnecessary and harmful.

About 2,4-D Class II - restricted use pesticide poison and a few facts

Through the entire presentation there was no mention of IPM. Tru Green noted they would not use 2,4-D because their certified toxicologist, Dr. Roger Yeary, advised them not to because of published health reports. Tru Green proposed using the “alternative” herbicide, Trimec 959, which contains the chemicals MCPA, MCPP and dicamba instead. Paul told the group that dicamba also contains 2,4-D. Paul pointed out this is a tactic used by pesticide (poison) companies to switch to a different chemical (poison) after the one they use has proven to be a major problem. The ingredients are not explained and parents would not know the “switch” is useless because 2,4-D is still in the proposed “alternative” herbicide. MCPA and MCPP are also of concern, but there is little or no testing of these done yet. When the Tru Green Representatives were asked to guarantee the safety of our children, staff, pregnant mothers, birds, squirrels and pesticide applicators, they said they could not guarantee safety, that there was some risk involved with the use of pesticides (poisons). Paul Goettlich noted, “These representatives, trying to sell us pesticides (poisons), tell us there is a ‘risk’ is an understatement. Pesticides poisons are not safe!” 2,4-D is the most widely used herbicide in the world.

Sites that describe toxic pesticide poisonings in animals and humans. Frightening!

"We found that the occurrence of bladder cancer was between four and seven times higher in the group exposed to herbicides," Dr. Glickman said. "The level of risk corresponded directly with exposure to these chemicals: The greater the exposure, the higher the risk."

U.S. National Toxicology Program acute toxicity studies for 2,4-D
Dogs are 10 times more sensitive to the affects of Phenoxy Herbicides, more than rats, chickens, rabbits,  mice and guinee pigs.
It only takes 100mg to kill a dog with this herbicide, the lowest by far of any of the test animals.  It IS listed as Moderately Toxic which is definitely NOT THE SAME as "practically non-toxic" like Chemlawn claims their products are.

[LD50, the dose (in milligrams of substance per kilogram of body weight) that kills 50% of the test animals in a standard assay, through either oral or dermal exposure routes.]
